Harlingen is the second largest city in Cameron County in the US state of Texas . In 2000 the city had 57,564 inhabitants on 88.9 km². In 2005 it was estimated to have 62,318 residents. Harlingen is close to the Mexican border and South Padre Island .

history

The city was founded in 1904 and named after Harlingen in the Netherlands . In the same year a post office was built and a school in 1905. On April 15, 1910, the city had 1,126 inhabitants, in 1920 1,748 inhabitants. The economy was initially entirely on an agricultural basis. Vegetables and cotton were grown. The dissolution of Harlingen Air Force Base in 1962 led to a diversification of the local economy.
