The community occupies the southern part of the barrier island of the same name off the southern Texas Gulf coast . The town is connected to the mainland city of Port Isabel via the Queen Isabelle Causeway swing bridge. It is bordered to the east by the Gulf of Mexico , to the west by Laguna Madre, to the south by a headland and a canal leading from the Gulf to Brownsville ; in the north it turns into undeveloped island terrain. The most important connecting road is State Park Road 100, which connects to the Queen Isabelle Causeway and runs through the headland. The distance to the district capital Brownsville is around 30 kilometers.

The island of South Padre Island was explored in the 16th century by the Spanish . However, the location was remote until the 1950s. This only changed with the establishment of a mainland bridge - the Queen Isabelle Causeway , which went into operation in 1957 . In 1978 the place had an estimated population of around 340 inhabitants, ten years later over 1000. The modest, tourism- fed prosperity was, however, overshadowed by setbacks and disasters. In 1967, Hurricane Beulah wreaked havoc on the island.

Damage was also caused by Category 1 Hurricane Dolly in June 2008 and Hurricane Ike in September of the same year. Hurricane Alex brought heavy rain in July 2010. A serious crane accident in 2001 also caused a section of the Queen Isabelle Causeway to collapse.

South Padre Island's main industry is tourism. The main season is late winter , spring and summer . The tourist offers are aimed at an international clientele. Most of the local businesses are geared towards tourism - including hotels , restaurants , condominiums, and souvenir shops .
