Harlingen ( West Frisian and Low German Harns ) is a port city and municipality in the Dutch province of Friesland .
) (The name is probably based on the manor Harlinga and has no connection to the East Frisian area of Harlingen . As of January 31, 2019, the city had 15,740 inhabitants.
Location and economy
In economic terms, Harlingen is mainly characterized by agriculture, shipping, sea fishing and tourism. The final dike , which separates the Wadden Sea from the IJsselmeer , begins around eight kilometers south of Harlingen . Harlingen has different docks (referred to as an independent haven in the Netherlands). Today these are partly used for tourism (e.g. the Zuiderhaven for yachts and traditional sailing ships), partly for economic purposes. The commercial harbors give maritime shipping access to the province of Friesland. The new fishing port is also used by the large cutters from Urk . Mainly mussels are brought ashore. Harlingen still has a few small shipyards; only yachts are being built there. There are ferry connections to the West Frisian Islands Terschelling and Vlieland .
history
In 777 Gustavus Forteman founded the first Christian church in Friesland in Almenum. Around 1157 the Ludingakerke monastery was founded by Eilwardus Ludinga. The monks dug canals to boost trade. As a result, Harlingen, located west of Almenum and made up of two “terpenes” ( terps ), gained so much importance that in 1234 it was granted city rights . The city flourished at times when it turned economically to Holland .
The place was formerly to the west, but the sea tore land away several times, so that the place slowly shifted. In 1543 and 1565 there were extensions to the north, which made the Noorderhafen an inland port. In 1574, by order of the governor, the Duke of Alba , Caspar de Robles , the dikes on the Frisian coast had to be raised. In 1579 the city was expanded to the east due to the influx of Flemish Mennonites . Due to the increased sea trade with neighbors from the North and Baltic Seas, the city was expanded to the south in 1598. In 1644 the Frisian navy was relocated to the Zuiderhafen. However, merchant shipping continued to dominate Harlingen. There were liner services to the West Frisian Islands, to the whole province and the ports of the Zuiderzee to Amsterdam .
Even today, many goods are handled in the city's ports, for example wood, gravel and cattle.
