Súdwest-Fryslân ( Dutch Zuidwest-Friesland ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Fryslân (Friesland) . It was created on January 1, 2011 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Bolsward , Nijefurd , Sneek , Wûnseradiel and Wymbritseradiel . The new municipality has 89,739 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) who live in 69 settlement areas.
95% of the council members of the affected communities and 54% of the citizens surveyed have approved the community merger.
On January 1, 2014, the municipality was enlarged by part of the dissolved municipality of Boarnsterhim . Part of the dissolved community of Littenseradiel was incorporated into Southwest Fryslân on January 1, 2018.
Surname
As the name of the new municipality, Súdwest Fryslân (German: Südwestfriesland) was initially determined. The area in which the new municipality is located is known as Zuidwesthoek (German: Südwestecke). There was opposition to the name because it could lead to a wrong geographical classification of the new community. In West Friesland is a region in the north of the province of North Holland is. The new community would be east of West Friesland.
The new ward council may choose a different ward name. One suggestion was Súdwestergo after the historical area Westergo. However, until now the parish name has not been changed.

Jannewietske de Vries ( PvdA ) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since September 27, 2018 . The councilors include Maarten Offinga (CDA), Stella van Gent (PvdA), (CDA), (VVD), Erik Faber (GroenLinks) and the municipal secretary Pieter Zondervan.

- The Elfstedentocht , the famous speed skating marathon race, runs through Sneek , IJlst , Stavoren , Hindeloopen , Workum and Bolsward along the eleven Frisian cities .
