Workum ( Dutch ; West Frisian Warkum ) is a Dutch city in the southwest of the province of Friesland . The place has 4,435 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality of Southwest Fryslân . It is one of the eleven Frisian cities . Workum is connected to the IJsselmeer by a two-kilometer canal and has several marinas . Workum traditionally lived from sea trade, fishing and pottery , whereas today tourism and recreational boating are very important.
history
Workum developed from an agricultural settlement in the late Middle Ages into an important shipping center. The decisive factor for this was its location on the de Wymerts watercourse , which connected the Zuiderzee with the Frisian inland waters. This resulted in the elongated structure of the place along the water's edge.
The first settlement around the year 1000 AD was by fishermen and farmers on natural elevations. With the beginning of the dike, the settlements expanded. Workum received city rights in 1399 and at times had its own mint and its own guild .
Despite the decline of the Hanseatic League in the 15th century and the development of the cities in Holland and Zeeland , Workum retained an important position because of its shipbuilding industry. There was also a well-known pottery industry. In the first quarter of the 16th century there were sieges and looting. In 1533 the city is obliged to maintain the sea dike. In the 17th century some inland lakes were polded and drained, a waterway to Boalsert was built (1620–1648) and the sea lock was renewed (1658). Due to the poor accessibility of Workum due to silting and the strong position of De Lemmer and Harns , shipping almost came to a standstill in the 18th century. In the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, a number of canals and waterways in the city were filled in and used as agricultural land.
Since 1984 Workum with Stavoren and Hindeloopen belonged to the municipality of Nijefurd , since 2011 to the newly formed municipality of Southwest Fryslân .

Friesland Foods is a major employer in Workum . This company runs a large milk processing plant in Workum, which among other things produces cheese. The factory building, a large gray cube, can be seen from afar.

- St.-Gertrudis-Kerk, construction started in 1480, a Gothic hall church with an important choir, the largest and oldest in Friesland, with a free-standing, massive bell tower adorned by a tower lantern with a carillon; worth seeing sacristy; Frisian landmark
- Guild stretchers on which the coffins of the deceased were carried out of the church, the oldest from the 17th century, significant painting; Twelve of these stretchers have been preserved, all of them set up in the St. Gertrudiskerk
