Hindeloopen, view of the city

Hindeloopen ( West Frisian Hylpen , Hindeloopers Hielpen ) is a small Dutch town in the southwest of the province of Friesland on the edge of the IJsselmeer , the former Zuiderzee .

history

Reliable evidence goes back to the year 779. In 825, the name Hindolop was first used for this settlement in a document . A chapel was built here in the 12th century and a church was built in the 14th century. Hindeloopen received city rights around 1225 and has been one of the Frisian eleven cities since then . Hindeloopen was near a creek on the Wadden Sea. There was no port, but the ships were anchored in the roadstead when the tide was high, and on the seabed when the tide was low. At high tide, the ships could pick up cargo on a quay on land.

Hindeloopen has been an important trading city since the Middle Ages. Intensive trade relations were maintained with Lübeck and other Hanseatic cities . There was also timber trade with Norway. Between 1650 and 1790 in the heyday of the Netherlands, the so-called Golden Age , the city had its most successful period with a fleet of more than 80 merchant ships at times. Large quantities of goods were imported from the colonies and then resold in Europe. Many of the captains' houses date from this period as a reminder of how rich Hindeloopen was. With the increasing competition from England and France, which were above all militarily superior to the small Netherlands, the decline of the Netherlands and the decline of the city began towards the end of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 19th century the economic situation of the city improved once again due to increased fishing. At that time there were about 75 fishing trawlers. The fishing boats carried the letter code HI .

After the construction of the IJsselmeer dike in 1932, the bay became an inland lake. This led to a collapse in fish stocks in traditional fisheries . The fishing fleet had to be reduced. Today there are still few fishermen in Hindeloopen.

Hindeloopen was an independent municipality until 1984, but was then merged with the neighboring towns of Workum , Stavoren and parts of other municipalities to form the municipality of Nijefurd , and since 2011 to form the newly formed municipality of Southwest Fryslân .

Culture and economy

Hindeloopen is now a museum city with its picturesque old houses and canals. Today it lives mainly from the tourism of the IJsselmeer sailors and has a few small souvenir shops, a flea market and antique market, bars, pensions and a discotheque. In the large marina there is a restaurant, a small swimming pool, saunas, squash courts and a small hotel.
