Gisela Kraft

Gisela Kraft (born June 28, 1936 in Berlin ; † January 5, 2010 in Bad Berka ) was a German writer and literary translator from Turkish .

Life

Gisela Kraft grew up in Berlin. From 1956 to 1959 she completed an acting and eurythmy training in Berlin, Stuttgart and Dornach . From 1960 to 1972 she worked at various theaters. In 1972 she began studying Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin , which she completed in 1978 with a doctoral thesis on the Turkish poet Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca . From 1978 to 1983 she was a research assistant at the Institute for Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin. From 1980 to 1982 she was chairwoman of the New Society for Literature in Berlin and was involved in the Peace Movement in the Artists for Peace initiative . In November 1984 the staunch socialist moved to East Berlin. From 1997 she lived in Weimar until she died in 2010 after a long illness during a hospital stay in neighboring Bad Berka.

In her poetry and prose, Gisela Kraft processed the impressions of her travels in the Middle East and her scholarly study of Turkish culture. She has also emerged as a translator from Turkish. For this work she received the Weimar Prize in 2006 and the Christoph Martin Wieland Prize in 2009 for her adaptation of Nâzım Hikmet's Die Namen der Sehnsucht .
