New Society for Literature

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Society for Literature e. V. Berlin (NGL) was founded in 1973 by Ingeborg Drewitz and other authors and was Berlin's largest association of authors.

history

Foundation approaches

At the suggestion of the Association of German Writers (VS) and under the leadership of the association's co-founder and at that time Deputy Chairwoman Ingeborg Drewitz , the New Society for Literature (NGL) was founded as a registered association in West Berlin and began operating in 1990/91 all of Berlin extended. Not least economic constraints had led to the founding of the NGL: after the VS had become part of a union, the possibility of direct funding of activities and events with readings by the Berlin Senate Department for Cultural Affairs ceased because this authority per se did not receive any funding Union can pay.

A new approach taken by the NGL at its inception was “both composition, ie. H. except authors take other professional and social groups, as well as the framework in which this could happen, namely the working and project groups. "In the inaugural answered Hannes Schwengersbauer ," an author who besides Ingeborg Drewitz u. a. was instrumental in promoting the founding of the NGL ", the question of the extent to which the new association should or should be political, with the fact that" the NGL is primarily about the principle of democratization and finding new interest groups. "

This democratic claim should also be expressed “in its entire internal structure”. The board members were elected in a broad, democratic process: three representatives each from the ranks of the NGL and the VS as well as one representative each from the working or project groups. This resulted in a board group of at least eleven, which in turn had the task of appointing a representative from each of its three groups, so that "the 'actual' board, the so-called executive committee, was composed of three people". The main task of this presidium was to represent the association externally, to declare itself responsible for the accounting of state grants and to endeavor to promote the proposals and initiatives from the entire board group. As “confirmed from many sides”, however, in the first few years the decision about what should or should not be implemented was largely left to Ingeborg Drewitz and Dieter Straub. This was mainly due to the fact that the Senate for Cultural Affairs only approved a permanent half-day position with 20 hours per week for an executive secretariat in 1979, which was only increased to 30 and 40 hours per week in 1985 and 1991; At the same time, the NGL was only given a noteworthy office from 1984 onwards.

deals

The NGL offered authors and other cultural institutions in Berlin and, after reunification, also in Brandenburg support in various forms. So they organized lectures, discussions, exhibitions, conferences and festivals like that of Horst-Dieter Klock founded and project from 1990 to 1999 led Märchentage Berlin , the International Berlin Comic Festival , readers show (Berlin festival by young authors) and the workshop for young writers .

It has also edited several anthologies and almanacs with contributions from its members and in other contexts. In addition, together with Hannes Schwenger, as initiator and honorary publishing director, she founded Edition Mariannenpresse in 1979 for her own editions and as a project sponsorship for writers and artists (later also with the participation of other sponsors) to realize u. a. Books, folders and text posters according to their ideas. Furthermore, in cooperation with the working group of small publishers in the Berlin Publishers and Booksellers Association, the NGL was the sponsor of the Berlin book exhibition "exlibris" and co-founder of the German-Polish poet steamer .

Dissolution of the NGL

The last reports on the NGL can be found on June 29, 2003 for the 30th anniversary of the association, at that time it still had “more than 400 members”, and in the mid-1990s even almost 700 members. The last updated version of the NGL homepage can be accessed via Wayback Machine on July 30, 2004 at www.ngl-berlin.de .

According to Dietger Pforte , the NGL was dissolved in 2004 because the association saw no more opportunities to act within the completely restructured literary life in Berlin after the fall of the Wall .

The Berlin Fairy Tale Days , initiated by the NGL in 1990, were started in 2004 by the Märchenland e. V. taken over and continued. The founders of the association are the former Berliner Märchentage NGL project manager Silke Fischer and the former NGL managing director Monika Panse, who have worked for the association since then.
