Mitch Cohen
Mitch Cohen (* 1952 in Pasadena ) is an American translator , author and editor who has lived in Berlin since 1977 .
Live and act
Cohen studied 1969-1974 English at the University of California, Santa Barbara , graduating with a thesis on William Carlos Williams and the degree of Bachelor of Arts from. In Germany since 1975, Cohen initially worked as an au pair and groom for a family in the Odenwald. In 1977 he moved to Berlin. He studied English and German at the Free University of Berlin ; During this time he earned his living with art and ceramics lessons in a school shop and was a tutor for GDR poetry from 1979 to 1980 .
From 1973 to 1975, Cohen and KC Swartzel were responsible for the compilation and presentation of the contributions for a weekly lyric show on the college radio station KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara, California .
After arriving in West Berlin in 1977, Cohen soon made contact with the cultural and literary scene not only there, but also in East Berlin . In 1983 he brought u. a. the anthology Berlin: contemporary writing in East and West with contributions by 54 authors for whom he smuggled numerous manuscripts from the GDR to West Berlin between 1978 and 1983 . In 1984 he presented his first volume of poetry as an author together with Bert Papenfuß-Gorek .
He has been working as a freelance translator since 1988 , and since 1993 also as a freelancer at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . He has translated numerous literary and scientific articles and books, as well as art catalogs and journalistic contributions, for example for Deutsche Welle television . In addition, he organized numerous readings in the Berlin literature club “Culinaria” and was on the board of the “ New Society for Literature ” in Berlin from 1995 to 1998 .
Mitch Cohen is married and lives in Berlin.
