Location and economy

Old town hall of IJlst

The municipality was south of Sneek in the lake area that characterizes the southwest of Fryslân. Water sports tourism and the related trade (including small shipyards in Heeg) and cattle breeding are the pillars of the local economy. IJlst has a small train station on the Leeuwarden - Staveren local railway . The town has an old tradition of wood processing.

history

IJlst has already received 1268 the city charter . At that time it was on the small river Ee or Ye, which flowed into the Zuidersee . The canal in the city center is a remnant of this watercourse. In 1865 the company Nooitgedagt (German: Never thought) settled here . This company became famous all over the Netherlands for its planes and other carpentry tools of the highest quality, wooden toys and especially ice skates . It was taken over by a foreign competitor in 1995 and went bankrupt a few years later. The Nooitgedagt ice skates, so-called Friese doorlopers , consist of a wooden structure under which the ice skate's iron is attached. The company's products can be viewed in a small museum in one of the former factory buildings in downtown IJlster.

In 1984 the new municipality of Wymbritseradiel was created as part of the municipality reform in the Netherlands by merging with numerous previously independent neighboring villages. This in turn merged in 2011 in the new large municipality of Southwest Fryslân .

IJlst is one of the Frisian Eleven Cities (see: Elfstedentocht ).

Heeg was known for its eel fishermen in the 19th century . At that time they even had their own sales facility in London on the Thames .

Many of the small villages are situated on a mound , here in Friesland terp called. Some of them were settled by farmers before the year 400. Most of the villages did not emerge until the Middle Ages .
