location
Heeg is about 10 km south of Sneek on the north bank of the Heegermeer . The IJsselmeer can be reached from here via the Heegermeer, the Johan Friso Canal and the lock in the village of Stavoren or to the south via Woudsend , Sloten and Lemmer .
history
In addition to agriculture, Heeg developed a brisk trade due to its central location and good connections via waterways with all Frisian cities. Eel was primarily traded at home and abroad. Among other things, eel was exported to Antwerp and from 1731 to London . There the so-called Palingaaken, Frisian trading sailors , had a permanent berth near the Billingsgate Fishmarket for over 200 years . The ships specially built for this trade carried the live goods (15,000 to 20,000 pounds) from Stavoren to London as quickly as possible .
activities
Heeg is a well-known water sports center on Heegermeer / De Fluessen and has a number of boatyards , marinas and sailing schools .
