Lemmer ( West Frisian De Lemmer ) is a Dutch town on the edge of the IJsselmeer with 10,225 inhabitants. It belongs to the municipality of De Friese Meren ( West Frisian De Fryske Marren ). Lemmer is one of Friesland's most important water sports locations and has a central function for the south of the province of Friesland. Lemmer is located in Lemsterland (name of a former municipality where Lemmer was located) - an area rich in water with many lakes - in addition to the IJsselmeer, for example, Tjeukemeer and Groote Brekken . These are suitable for many forms of water sports and fishing.

Ice skating is a popular sport in Lemmer. When severe frosts announce themselves, large parking lots are flooded and then - together with the frozen canals - form large ice rinks. Sailing is also a popular sport in Lemmer, with many sailing schools.

history

Lemmer - small port town on the IJsselmeer

The first residents of Lemmer probably settled at the confluence of the Rien and Zijlrode . The exact time is not known. Lemmer was mentioned by name at the beginning of the 14th century. Already in 1228 it belonged as Lenna to the Archdiocese of Utrecht. Later the name was probably mixed with the name Lammerbroeke . This name was mentioned as early as 1165 as an earlier name of Lemsterhoek , a small fortress that was west of today's town of Lemmer. In 1400 this was devastated by the Dutch , the inhabitants west of the Zuiderzee , today's IJsselmeer . The place was not rebuilt, but he and his name are mainly known to seafarers and fishermen. Other names are known, including Lyamer .

Lemmer was in an endangered place and was brought under Dutch influence several times, for example in 1197. In 1422 Jan van Beieren ("Jan without mercy"), who had been called to Friesland by the Schieringers as a protector, built a castle. Even Karl von Egmond , Duke of funds, sought to Friesland and settled in 1521 in Lemmer build a log house as accommodation for a garrison. Two years later he left it to the Burgundians. In 1581 Lemmer started a line service across the Zuiderzee with Holland. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Lemmer was the home port of the Dutch merchant ships that sailed the Baltic Sea.

In 1799 British troops landed in Lemmer in the Anglo-French War and occupied the place for some time. In 1825 the dike broke in several places. Many houses were devastated.

In the 19th century Lemmer was one of the most important fishing ports in the Netherlands and at times had a fleet of more than 140 ships. The Lemster Aak is the type of a historic flat-bottom sailing ship and comes from Lemmer. The sailing yacht of Princess Beatrix , De Groene Draak is a Lemster Aak. With the construction of the dike and the polders in Flevoland, its importance in the fishing industry waned. Today Lemmer has a central function for southern Friesland and the northern part of Flevoland. Due to the location at the end of the Prinses-Magriet Canal and the proximity to the IJsselmeer, water sports tourism is of great importance today. Every year the Lemsterweek is held with a series of events. It attracts up to 85,000 people.
