history

Bolsward was built on a three-part terp . The oldest part is where the Martinskirche (Frisian: Martinytsjerke) stands. The Brothers Church (Broeretsjerke), which was destroyed by fire in 1980 and preserved as a ruin , is the oldest building in the city and partly dates from the end of the 13th century. The image of the Virgin Mary Us Leaffrou fan Sânwâlden , which is currently kept in the St. Francis Basilica (Sint-Fransiskustsjerke) on Dijlakker, also dates from the Middle Ages .

Bolsward received city rights in 1455 and was one of the Hanseatic cities . The town hall, which was built between 1614 and 1617, is a symbol of the flourishing city in the 17th century. It was built in the late Renaissance style and enlarged in 1765. In the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century there was a brisk butter and cheese trade, which helped the city to great prosperity. In the second half of the 18th century, however, the number of inhabitants decreased from 2,878 in 1748 to 2,500. The local textile industry suffered from foreign competition, the butter and cheese market weakened due to a cattle epidemic rampant in Friesland.
