Heerenveen ( West Frisian It Hearrenfean ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Friesland and, according to the CBS, had 50,271 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . The total area of the municipality is 198.17 km².

The municipality includes the town of Heerenveen (around 30,000 inhabitants) and the villages and settlements: Bontebok, De Knipe, Gersloot, Hoornsterzwaag, Jubbega, Katlijk, Luinjeberd, Mildam, Nieuwehorne, Nieuweschoot, Oranjewoud, Oudehaske, Oudehorne, Terbandeschoot.
Location and economy
Heerenveen is located on some of the waterways used by inland shipping and on the motorway and railway line between Leeuwarden and Zwolle . The express trains also stop at the station.
In Heerenveen, which is the economic, social and cultural center of the area, there are several schools, a hospital, a psychiatric institution, a theater, etc.
The main factory is the Batavus - bicycle factory , which was founded in the 1904th Today it belongs to the Accell Group , whose headquarters are in Heerenveen.
history
Heerenveen was founded in 1551 by three counts for peat extraction. The name is derived from the words heer (= "Herr", "Graf") and veen (= "Fehn" , "Torf"). Heerenveen never received city rights .
From 1700 the suburb of Oranjewoud, which lies in the middle of a small forest area, was popular with the wealthy of the province. Encouraged by the governor of Friesland , who had a country estate built himself, they too built mansions. These are now in use as a luxury hotel or clinic.
Around 1880 the socialist Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis tried very hard to improve the situation of the workers in the region. A small museum is dedicated to him in Heerenveen.
After the Second World War , industrialization began. At times the Philips group had a factory in the city.
On January 1, 2014, Heerenveen parts of the municipality Boarnsterhim were incorporated after its dissolution.

Tjeerd van der Zwan ( PvdA ) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since June 10, 2011 . His colleagues include the alderman Jelle Zoetendal (PvdA), Hans Broekhuizen ( CDA ), Jaap van Veen ( VVD ) and the municipal secretary Jeroen van Leeuwestijn .
Sporty and sightseeing
Apart from the “Crackstate” mansion, Heerenveen has hardly any monuments. The city has a sporty atmosphere.
The Thialf speed skating stadium , named after a figure from Nordic mythology , was one of the first covered competition venues of its kind in the world. National and international competitions are held there every year.
The football club SC Heerenveen has played in the Dutch honor division without interruption since 1993 and has already taken part in several European competitions . Its stadium with a capacity of around 26,000 seats is named after Abe Lenstra , who was born in Heerenveen and was one of the best players in Dutch football history and a national player in the 1940s and 1950s.
