Batavus BV is a Dutch bicycle manufacturer in Heerenveen . The company, founded in 1904, was one of the largest manufacturers in the Netherlands. Batavus is now part of the Dutch Accell Group .
history
Batavus was founded in 1904. Batavus Intercycle Corporation was the leading manufacturer of bicycles and mopeds in the Netherlands in the 1970s. In its most productive times, the company had 33,000 square meters of production space. The Heerenveen factory employed 700 people to produce 70,000 Batavus mopeds and 250,000 bicycles a year. Batavus exported 55 percent of its production.
In 2010, Batavus and Bäumker & Co. GmbH , a wholesaler from Rheine ( Westphalia ) founded in 1931 , formed Batavus Bäumker GmbH and was taken over by the Dutch Accell Group .
Batavus Professional
From the early 1970s to the early 1990s, Batavus produced a range of professional road, cyclocross , touring and time trial frames. The frames were labeled Handbuilt in Holland by Batavus . The frames were available in tube grades 531C, 531P (Reynolds tubes) and SL, SP and SLX (Columbus tubes). The dropouts came from Campagnolo .
Cycling
Batavus had its own amateur team. From the mid-1980s Batavus was the official outfitter for the Dutch KNWU / AMEV team.
