IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Studio (usually just referred to as CPLEX ) is a program system for modeling and solving optimization problems using mathematical optimization and constraint programming . In addition to a command line- based solver , CPLEX also provides the modeling language OPL and extensive libraries with connection to the programming languages C , C ++ , C # , Java and Python . There is also a Matlab toolbox and interfaces to SPSS and Microsoft Excel .

history

CPLEX was originally developed in 1987 by Robert Bixby as an implementation of the simplex method for solving linear optimization problems in the C programming language. This was first sold commercially and further developed in 1988 by CPLEX Optimization Inc., which he and Janet Lowe founded. As one of the market leaders in operations research , CPLEX Optimization Inc. was acquired by ILOG in 1997 .

Robert Bixby, Janet Lowe and Paul E. Green won the first INFORMS Impact Prize in 2004 for working on CPLEX .

In January 2009, IBM took over the company ILOG and has since been responsible for the further development and sales of CPLEX.
