Simon Vestdijk (born October 17, 1898 in Harlingen , † March 23, 1971 in Doorn ) was a Dutch writer.

From 1917 to 1927 he studied medicine, then was a doctor until 1932, including some time on board a ship. Vestdijk wrote at the beginning (1920s) under the pseudonym Petit Moune . From 1932 he lived on literature. He retired to Doorn ( Utrecht Province ), where he died in March 1971.

Vestdijkkroniek , 1973 ff., Is published twice a year (2016: number 127/128) by Vestdijkkring (approx. 250 members). Vestdijkkring was founded in 1972 to promote Vestdijk's work after his death. In addition to the publication of the Vestdijkkroniek, information about Vestdijk is published on the website, the Ina Damman Prize (Ina Dammanprijs) and the Anton Wachter Prize (Anton Wachterprijs) are awarded, and reading rings and symposia about Vestdijk are organized.

Vestdijk became famous for the 50 novels he wrote. Some of them are autobiographies , which can be recognized by the fact that the main character is called Anton Wachter and comes from "Lahringen" (an anagram of Harlingen in Friesland , where Vestdijk spent his youth). Some others are partly autobiographical, u. a. The copper garden (De Koperen tuin, 1950) . The theme of expulsion from paradise appears in this work. Other well-known novels include a .: Pastorale 1943 (1948); The fifth seal (Het vijfde zegel, 1937), about the Spanish painter El Greco ; The fire worshipers (De vuuraanbidders, 1947) on religious disputes in the 17th century; The Waiter and the Living (De kelner en de levenden, 1949), with the Last Judgment as the theme. Vestdijk's style was baroque, with many interruptions and leaps of thought. Several of his novels were filmed and translated into German.

Vestdijk was a very productive man of letters. His colleague Menno ter Braak (1902–1940) called him in 1940 a "devil artist". He wrote many poems which, according to many connoisseurs, have been wrongly undervalued. In his poetry , themes such as fear, youth, death, love and adoration come to the fore again and again. He also wrote essays and was a literary critic and music critic (including the collection: The future of religion , De toekomst der religie). These works are also considered to be very important and high-class in some cases.

Vestdijk had a great influence on later authors such as Maarten 't Hart . He himself was influenced by James Joyce (1882–1941), Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) and Franz Kafka (1883–1924).
