It has been awarded every two years since 1977 by the Central Committee 1945 (Centraal Comité 1945), the Frisian community of Harlingen and the Vestdijkkring for the best debut novel. The award is named after the fictional character Anton Wachter , main character and alter ego of a novel cycle by Simon Vestdijk .
