Frans Kellendonk

Franciscus Gerardus Petrus (Frans) Kellendonk (born January 7, 1951 in Nijmegen ; died February 15, 1990 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch writer and translator.

Life

Frans Kellendonk had three sisters and grew up in Nijmegen. He studied English at the University of Nijmegen and after the state examination in 1972 at the University of Birmingham . He received his PhD in 1975 with a dissertation on 17th century English publishers John and Richard Marriot .

Kellendonk translated 1975 novel The Wanderers by Richard Price . The other authors he translated were Joseph Brodsky , John Fowles , Henry James , Gayl Jones , Rudyard Kipling , Wyndham Lewis , Robert David MacDonald , Thomas de Quincey and Laurence Sterne , followed in 1989 by the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë . He held teaching positions at the Universities of Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leiden.

Kellendonk wrote novels, short stories and essays. In 1986 the novel “Mystiek Lichaam” (“Mystical Body”) was published, a work that was politically controversial at the time. Kellendonk received the Anton Wachter Prize and the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prize and was nominated for the AKO Literatuurprijs . Kellendonk became infected with the HI virus and died of AIDS in 1990 at the age of 39 .

The publishing house JM Meulenhoff published the work edition (Het complete werk) in 1992 . In 1993 the Frans Kellendonk Fund set up the Frans Kellendonk Prize .
