JM Meulenhoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JM Meulenhoff (mostly only the short form Meulenhoff is used) is a Dutch book publisher. It is one of the largest publishers in the Netherlands and has its headquarters in Amsterdam .

history

The publishing house was founded in 1895 by Johannes Marius Meulenhoff as an import bookstore. The company's expansion, which began in the 1960s, led to the takeover of the Malherbe Group in 1991 (including AW Bruna Uitgevers, Uitgeverij Prometheus and Uitgeverij Bert Bakker (1992)).

In 1994, Meulenhoff was completely taken over by the publishing group De Persgroep Nederland ("PCM Uitgevers" until 2009), which had already been involved in the publishing house under its previous name "Perscombinatie". Expansion was then continued with the acquisitions of Thieme (1994), SMD (1995), Uitgeverij Arena (1997) and Uitgeverij Het Spectrum (with Boeknet) (1999).

In 2000 the overarching holding company “Meulenhoff & Co” was split up into “PCM Algemene Boeken” and “ThiemeMeulenhoff”. The latter was formed from a merger of the publishers Meulenhoff Educatief, Thieme and SMD and has since been an independent group component within De Persgroep Nederland as an educational publisher.

Publishing program

The publishing program, which comprises around 400 titles, consists of novels , volumes of poetry , essays and non-fiction books .

In addition to Dutch authors such as Maarten Biesheuvel, Kees Ouwens and Jan Wolkers , the program also includes translations by Gabriel García Márquez , Günter Grass , Amos Oz , Rainer Maria Rilke , Lew Tolstoy , Joachim Krause and others, as well as the African-speaking writers André Brink and Etienne van Heerden. In the years 1962–2005 JM Meulenhoff was also the editor of the literary magazine De Gids , which is now published by the publishing house “Balans”.
