Busken Huet Prize

The Busken Huet Prize ( Dutch Busken Huetprijs ) was a Dutch literary prize that honors authors who have made outstanding contributions in the field of biography or essay .

The prize has existed since 1947, but until 1971 it was awarded under the name Essayprijs van de gemeente Amsterdam . Together with two other Amsterdam literary prizes, the Herman Gorter Prize and the Multatuli Prize , it was included in the 2003 Amsterdam Prize for Art ( Amsterdamprijs voor de kunst ).

The Busken Huet Prize has been awarded annually since 1990, before that it was biennial. The award was named after the writer and critic Conrad Busken Huet (1826–1886). The prize was awarded by the Amsterdam Fund for Art (Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunst - AFK).

Overview of the three Amsterdam literary prizes

After the Second World War , three literary prizes were established in Amsterdam:

  • Poëzieprijs van de gemeente Amsterdam (Poetry Prize of the City of Amsterdam) - 1945 to 1971; from 1972–2002 Herman Gorterprijs , then Amsterdamprijs voor de kunst
  • Essayprijs van de gemeente Amsterdam (Essay Prize of the City of Amsterdam) - 1947 to 1971;, from 1972–2002 Busken Huetprijs , then Amsterdamprijs voor de kunst
  • Prozaprijs van de gemeente Amsterdam (Prose Prize of the City of Amsterdam) - 1946 to 1971; from 1972–2002 Multatuli Prize , then Amsterdamprijs voor de kunst

Since 2003, all three literary prizes have been included in the Amsterdamprijs voor de kunst along with other art prizes .
