Herman Rudolf (Rudy) Kousbroek (born November 1, 1929 , Pematang Siantar , on the east coast of North Sumatra , Dutch East Indies ; † April 4, 2010 , Leiden ) was a Dutch author , poet and essayist . He used the pseudonyms Leopold de Buch and Fred Coyett . Kousbroek belongs to the literary group called Vijftigers (Fifties), like Hugo Claus , Lucebert and Gerrit Kouwenaar , as well as Remco Campert , who co- edited the magazine Braak with Kousbroek .

biography

Kousbroek grew up in the Dutch East Indies, which was occupied by the Japanese in 1942 and which became Indonesia in 1945/1949. He and his parents were interned by the Japanese in one of their camps. In 1995 he published a report on a trip to his Indonesian places of memory (Terug naar Negri Pan Erkoms) . Dutch television accompanied him on his trip to Japan, and the accompanying book, In the Time Machine Through Japan , was published in 2000.

Kousbroek studied mathematics and physics in Amsterdam and Japanese and Chinese during his time in Paris . He lived there from 1950 to 1971. He was married to the American writer Ethel Portnoy (1927-2004). They had two children; the daughter Hepzibah Kousbroek (1954–2009) became known with an autobiographical book about her fatal illness.

Kousbroek was married to the Irish author and sinologist Sarah Hart. You have a daughter. He last lived in Leiden. 1994 awarded him University of Groningen , the honorary doctorate in philosophy. He has often written about animals ( De aaibaarheidsfactor - The cuddle factor ) and competed for the Partij voor de Dieren in the 2004 European Parliament elections and the 2006 Dutch Parliament elections .

  1. Kousbroek does not see this as an Asian concentration camp and pointed out the incomparably higher chances of survival. In his opinion, the situation of the Dutch in these camps was no worse than that of the native population under the previous Dutch rule. According to Kousbroek, the real trauma of this camp was that whites were humiliated by non-whites. His attitude led to bitter arguments with Dutch victims' associations and Jeroen Brouwers . Kousbroek's essays on this topic were published in the sixth volume of Anathema’s under the title Het Oostindisch kampsyndrom . Kousbroek also defended the Japanese Emperor Hirohito there
