Sem Dresden (1956)

Sem Dresden ( April 20, 1881 in Amsterdam - July 31, 1957 in The Hague ) was a Dutch composer and conductor .

Life

Dresden studied with Bernard Zweers at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Hans Pfitzner in Germany . From 1924 to 1937 he was director of the Amsterdam Conservatory , then director of The Hague Conservatory . After the German occupation of the Netherlands , the Dutch collaborators forced him to give up the office due to his Jewish origin, which he then held again from 1945 to 1949.

His work includes u. a. Chorus tragicus for choir and orchestra, variations for orchestra, a violin concerto, a Sinfonietta for clarinet and orchestra, as well as numerous chamber music works.

According to the Dutch Music Institute, his work as a musician, teacher, administrator and author had a major impact on Dutch musical life. He was represented on numerous bodies and commissions and was a board member of a number of music organizations. His contributions were published in daily newspapers such as De Amsterdammer and De Telegraaf and appeared in the collection of essays Stromingen en Tegenstromingen in de Muziek in 1953 (currents and countercurrents in music). His Algemene Muziekleer (General Music Theory ) reached eleven new editions. His students included Eduard van Beinum , Cor de Groot , Marius Monnikendam , Jan Mul , Willem van Otterloo , Leo Smit and the composer Rosy Wertheim .

Sem Dresden is the father of the eponymous writer Sem Dresden (1914–2002).
