Gerrit Komrij (born March 30, 1944 in Winterswijk ; † July 5, 2012 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch writer , poet and translator , critic , polemicist , columnist and playwright . Between 2000 and 2004 he was the poet of Vaderland , the national poet of the Netherlands.

Life

Komrij was born in 1944 on Iepenstraat in the small town of Winterswijk in the east of the Netherlands . According to personal information, he was born in the chicken coop where his parents took shelter from air raids.

He began to write early on. His first work was the collection of poems Maagdenburgse halve bollen en other poems from 1968. In 1979 he published the poetry anthology De Nederlandse poëzie van de 19de en 20ste eeuw in 1000 en enige Gedichten (German The Dutch poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries in 1000 and some poems ). In 2004, a quarter of a century later, this work was considered the Bible of Dutch poetry.

In 1984 Komrij emigrated to Portugal , first to Alvites in the mountains of Alto Trás-os-Montes in northern Portugal. In 1988 he moved to his last place of residence, Vila Pouca da Beira, in the Coimbra district . Gerrit Komrij received several literary prizes. He has published over 40 books and is one of the most productive and important Dutch writers of his time. He was u. a. awarded the PC Hooft-prijs .

Gerrit Komrij died in July 2012 in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis hospital in Amsterdam.
