Alvites is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality in northern Portugal .

history

Finds like those of the hill Monte Mel indicate a prehistoric settlement at least since the Castro culture .

The present-day town was probably built during the medieval Reconquista between the 10th and 13th centuries. In 1249, Alvites received its first town charter, which, however, was not very extensive and did not make Alvites the seat of its own administrative district. The place name probably goes back to the owner of an early local country estate ( villar ) who bore the name Alvito or Alvites, which was widely used at the time.

In the 17th and 18th centuries the community experienced a relative prosperity, and representative mansions were built on local estates, for example that of the Bacelar family or that of the Pereira Cabral family

In 1984 the eminent Dutch writer Gerrit Komrij moved to Alvites, where he lived for four years before moving to Vila Pouca da Beira .
