Cabanelas is a town and municipality in northern Portugal .

history

The current town was probably created after the medieval Reconquista .

In 1435 the place was run as a vila and as a separate municipality, it belonged to the monastery Mosteiro de Castro de Avelãs .

In 1890 the parish was temporarily dissolved and was part of the Abambres parish for a few years . In 1936, the formerly independent municipality of Chelas came from the municipality of Carvalhais to Cabanelas.
