Abreiro is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality in northern Portugal .

history

The pillory of shame ( Pelourinho ) erected in 1514 in the historic center of Abreiro

Finds in the region suggest prehistoric settlement. The Romans mined ores in the area.

The current place was probably created during the settlement policy in the course of the medieval Reconquista . Abreiro received its first city rights in 1225 by King D. Sancho II .

King D. Manuel confirmed and renewed the city rights in 1514.

Abreiro remained the seat of its own district until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1821 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg in 1834. As a result, the Abreiro district was dissolved in 1836. Since then it has been a parish of Mirandela County.
