Central place Frechas, with the pillory as a sign of the renewed city rights from 1514

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, also Celtic , Roman and Arab traces were found. The place name is probably of Celtiberian origin.
Today's place was probably created with the settlement policy in the course of the medieval Reconquista . Sometime after the establishment of the independent Kingdom of Portugal (1139), Frechas received its first city rights, which King D. Manuel renewed in 1513.
Frechas remained the seat of its own district until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution from 1821 and the following Miguelistenkrieg in 1834. After that, the Frechas district was dissolved and since then it has been a municipality of the Mirandela district. In 1936 the municipality of Vale de Sancha was dissolved and Frechas was incorporated.
In 1905, the Linha do Tua railway line reached the municipality, which received two stops at the Cachão and Frechas stations.
