Ernst Oldenburg (* 8. January 1914 in Gdansk ; † 9. January 1992 in Unna ) was a German painter and sculptor of Expressionism .

Ernst Oldenburg was accepted into Fritz Pfuhle's art class at the Technical University in Danzig in 1928 at the age of fourteen . Oldenburg had its first exhibition in 1932 in the Kunstkammer of Danzig together with works by Otto Dix . He got to know Max Pechstein , Karl Hofer and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner . From 1936 he studied and worked as an architect in Berlin . He made contacts with the international art scene in France and Italy. In 1938 he married Stella von Baggehufvudt. In 1940 Oldenburg was drafted into the Navy. In 1945 he fled with the family from Danzig to Stralsund. In 1949 he returned to East Berlin, where he a. a. came into contact with Bert Brecht and Anna Seghers . In 1954 he fled to the Federal Republic, where he settled in Fissau near Eutin . He turned to landscape painting. He made new trips abroad, especially to Paris. In the same year, Oldenburg set up a second studio in Marl . Exhibitions in the USA, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Scandinavia followed in 1958. Further exhibitions took place in Hamburg, Bremen, Frankfurt am Main and Essen. In 1967 he finally settled in Unna-Kessebüren , where he lived and worked in the old village school until the end of his life. In connection with further international exhibitions he traveled to Spain, Italy, Japan and the USA. In 1988 the artist suffered a severe stroke with the following right-sided paralysis. From then on he only worked with his left hand. Ernst Oldenburg died on January 9, 1992 in Unna.

Works

Ernst Oldenburg's complete oeuvre comprises more than 1,500 individual pieces from the fields of painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. The stylizing figure compositions that have been created since the late 1950s are typical.
