coat of arms

The title Duke of Alba (Spanish: Duque de Alba ) is one of the oldest titles in the Spanish nobility and was awarded in 1465 to the Álvarez de Toledo family , who already held the title of Count (conde) of Alba de Tormes . Alba de Tormes is a place in the Spanish province of Salamanca (see also: House Álvarez de Toledo )

The best-known bearer of this title was the 3rd Duke of Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel , who as governor of the Netherlands from 1567 to 1573 led a regiment of terror over the rebellious population.

In the course of time the title found its way into other families through female descendants and was associated with more and more high and old Spanish titles.
