San Benito is a city in Cameron County in the US state of Texas . The urban area has a size of 29 km² and lies in the catchment area of the Brownsville - Harlingen metropolitan area . In 2016, San Benito had a population of around 24,000 and was - after the two metropolises - the third largest city in the county.

Geographically, San Benito is located in the western center of Cameron County. Located just five kilometers southeast of Harlingen, the city of Rio Hondo and the small towns of Green Valley Farms, Lago and El Camino Angosto are in the immediate vicinity . The landscape of the urban environment is shaped by the flat coastal prairie of the East Texas Gulf coast interspersed with low tree cover . After Brownsville, the district capital , and Harlingen (population: 175,000 and 60,000), San Benito is the county's third largest city with a population of 24,000.
San Benito goes back to a settlement built by the Spanish at the end of the 18th century . In 1904, a real estate company reached a settlement with the descendants of the Spanish settlers, divided the area into individual parcels , and began selling . In 1907 the place received a post office . The first city council meeting took place on July 27, 1911. During the border riots on the Mexican Revolution train and the punitive action taken against the Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa under the command of General Pershing , the urban area was the location of National Guard units from Oklahoma , South Dakota and Tennessee . Several armed clashes between Texas Rangers and Mexican outlaws took place in the area around the city . The most spectacular incident was a train robbery in 2016, in which bandits operating in the area derailed the train , robbed the passengers and killed three people.
In its early days, San Benito was best known for its citrus fruit production and vegetable growing . After a drop in demand in the 1960s, local farms expanded their product range. With an industrial park of one and a half square kilometers , San Benito has meanwhile also become a center of light industry . The largest employer in the city is the expanded school district , the second largest is the Central Power and Light Company, which maintains a power station in La Paloma. The local medium is the newspaper San Benito News, which appears biweekly. School supplies are provided by the Texas Independent School District alongside the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District . Every year in February there is a cattle fair in San Benito . The population is over 90 percent Hispanic; however, it includes a growing number of Cubans and Puerto Ricans . A well-known person from the city is the country singer Freddy Fender , who co-founded the Tex-Mex "supergroup" Texas Tornados in the 1990s .
Demographics
According to 2016 data from the United States Census Bureau , the population that year was 24,442. 11,553 of them were male , 12,889 female . 16,963 inhabitants were 18 years of age or older, 7,469 children or adolescents , and 3,377 were older than 65 years. The median age was 31.7 years. 22,874 of the respondents described themselves as Hispanic or Latino (93.6%), 1,393 as white (5.7%), 29 as African American (0.1%). 140 (0.6%) stated that they belong to more than one ethnic group. The median income per household amounted loud census data on 28,700 US dollars (USD). The determined median income is well below that of the US as a whole (USD 53,000) and that for the state of Texas (USD 51,900). The census showed 37.5% of people living in poverty and 28.6% of people without health insurance .
