Rio Hondo is a city in Cameron County in the US - State of Texas with about 2,451 inhabitants (2016). Rio Hondo is about 25 kilometers north of the border with Mexico and 20 kilometers west of the coast of the Gulf of Mexico .

Rio Hondo is located in the north of Cameron County - northeast of the city of Harlingen on both sides of a small tributary to the Gulf. Within the county, Rio Hondo is located in the northern part, adjacent to Willacy County and less densely populated. Located between the closest big city Harlingen and the city airport Valley International Airport and the Harlingen Industrial Park . Nearby villages in the south and southeast are the settlements Arroyo Gardens and Locano.

The village was founded in 1910. It was named after its location on Arroyo Colorado; the English translation for Rio Hondo is Deep River . The first settler was JR George; he ran a general store and after the post office was built in 1911 he held the post of postmaster. In 1914 the place had 150 inhabitants. In 1925 it had risen to around 250; In 1929 there were already around 1000. Rio Hondo was officially founded as a city in 1939. The population was estimated at 713 at the time; the number of businesses in the village was 33. By 2010, the population rose to over 2,300. The website Rio Hondy Realty characterizes the place as being dominated by farming and highlights the tension bridge over the Deep River as a local attraction.

Demographics

According to 2016 data from the United States Census Bureau , the population that year was 2,451 people. 1,113 of them were male , 1,338 female . 1,885 inhabitants were 18 years or older, 566 children or adolescents , 628 older than 65 years. The median age was 46.5 years. According to the census definition of race , 2,059 of the respondents described themselves as Hispanic or Latino (84%), 364 as white (14.9%), 15 as African-American (0.6%) and 13 as Asian (0.5%). No resident gave the definition of “more than one ethnic group”. The median income per household was 23,600 US dollars (USD) according to the census . The determined median income was thus significantly below that of the USA as a whole (USD 53,000) and the state of Texas (USD 51,900). As people living in poverty , the census showed 21.9%, as people without health insurance 14.9%.
