The Koyukon are a group of Athapaskan people in northern Alaska . Their original home is along the Koyukuk Rivers and Yukon Rivers , where they have fed by hunting and trapping for thousands of years. Many Koyukon live in a similar way today.

history

The first Europeans to reach the Koyukon Territory were Russians, who came to Nulato via the Yukon River in 1838. They found items such as iron pots, glass beads, clothing, and tobacco, items that the Koyukon obtained from trading with coastal Inuit . The first whites spread an epidemic of smallpox. In the years that followed, European diseases would drastically decimate the Koyukon population. Relative isolation along the Koyukuk River lasted until 1898 when the gold rush drove more than a thousand whites to the river. Many of them left the area again the following winter.
