The Fontana delle Naiadi

The Naiad Fountain ( Italian : Fontana delle Naiadi ) is a fountain inaugurated in 1901 on the Piazza della Repubblica (formerly Piazza dell'Esedra ) in Rome . It is located near the Baths of Diocletian .

In the middle of the fountain are water nymphs playing with marine animals, the eponymous naiads . They represent the four types of water: the swan for the lakes, the water snake for the rivers, the frilled lizard- like dragon for the underground waters and finally the hippocampus for the oceans. They are arranged around the allegory of the man conquering the adverse forces of nature , which depicts the sea god Glaucus and was only established in 1912.

The figures were designed by Mario Rutelli .
