The current codes are available on the ISO website under #iso: code: 3166: IT .

General

There are two-digit numbers for the regions and two letters for the provinces. In the first newsletter (ISO 3166-2: 2000-06-21), spelling mistakes in the names of the provinces of Massa-Carrara and Pesaro and Urbino were corrected. In the eighth newsletter (ISO 3166-2: 2007-04-17) four newly founded provinces in Sardinia were added. In newsletter II-1 (ISO 3166-2: 2010-02-03) three more newly founded provinces were added and the name and code of the province Forlì-Cesena corrected. In Newsletter II-2 (ISO 3166-2: 2010-06-30) the codes of three provinces have been corrected; since then all provincial codes have matched the license plates again . In 2019, the codes of the Friuli Venezia Giulia provinces were deleted and the changes to the provinces of the Sardinia region were taken into account.

For the metropolitan city of Rome , the license plates used are ROMA or, if only two characters are possible for reasons of space, RM. In ISO 3166-2 only RM is valid.

A province of Aosta , whose territory included the present-day Aosta Valley region as well as parts of the metropolitan city of Turin , existed only from 1927 to 1945 . In ISO 3166-2, today's region was also listed as "Province of Aosta / Aoste" until 2019.
