ISO 3166-2: FR
The list of ISO-3166-2 codes for France contains the codes for the
13 regions (région métropolitaine) ,
96 départements (département métropolitain) ,
6 overseas regions / départements (région / département d'outre-mer) ,
9 overseas - Local authorities (collectivité territoriale d'outre-mer) and
1 dependent territory (dépendance) .
The codes consist of two parts separated by a hyphen. The first part gives the country code according to ISO 3166-1 (for France FR
), the second the code for the region, the department, the local authority or the area.
The current codes are available on the ISO website under #iso: code: 3166: FR .
The regions originally had single letters and the departments had two-digit numbers 01 to 95 , which are borrowed from the numbering of the departments according to the alphabet. The overseas regions / departments are an exception here; like the overseas local authorities, they received two letters after their respective ISO-3166-1 code . The names for the Corsican departments (2A for Corse-du-Sud and 2B for Haute-Corse ) are explained by the fact that the two departments were temporarily combined into one, which bore the number 20. Since 2016, the region codes have consisted of three letters.
All geocodes were defined on September 11, 1995 by the Association française de normalization (AFNOR) and only standardized internationally with ISO 1998. They are also used for the license plates .
Changes
- A typographical error attributing the Deux-Sèvres department to the wrong region was corrected in May 2002.
- Saint-Barthélemy and the northern part of the island of St. Martin , formerly communes of the overseas department of Guadeloupe , have been French overseas territories since February 2007 and received their own codes in November 2007.
- Clipperton , administered by the High Commissioner in French Polynesia from June 1936 , has been under the direct administration of the French government since February 2007 and received its own code in November 2007.
- By the end of 2015, there were 22 regions in the European part of France instead of the current 13, which were partially merged on January 1, 2016. This restructuring as well as various changes in the overseas areas were taken into account by ISO in 2016.
