License plate (France)
Since April 15, 2009, the license plates in France have been numbered consecutively according to the AB-123-CD model. The previous system had been in effect since April 1, 1950. The last license plates according to the old system were assigned to vehicles in the event of a change of department until October 13, 2009.
Current labeling system (SIV, "Système d'immatriculation de véhicules")
The license plates are continuously issued in a national series according to the AB-123-BC model. Both the front and rear license plates usually have black letters on a white background. The blue euro field with the nationality code F is on the left . The earlier regional coding with the number of the respective department is no longer possible. Since the regional labels were quite popular among the population, the planned change led to protests. As a result, the additional blue field originally planned as an option on the right edge of the license plate, in which the logo of a region and the number of one of its departments are displayed, became mandatory. The region and the associated department can be freely selected and are not tied to the admission location. Corresponding two-line signs are issued for two-wheelers with a displacement of more than 50 cm³. There is no possibility of a custom license plate .
The French license plates are based on the Italian license plate system introduced in 1999 , which also allows the origin and the year of manufacture of the vehicle to be specified on the right-hand side. A similar system was introduced in Albania in February 2011 .
With the conversion to the new system, the special numbers for the police , military and other authorities were abolished. The vehicles of the institutions mentioned now have normal serial number plates. Occasionally, these are supplemented by unofficial stickers from the relevant authority (e.g. the gendarmerie ).
The Japanese vehicle manufacturer Mazda secured the first license plate of the current system . Laurent Hamard, Sales Manager at Mazda France, received the combination AA-001-AA for his Mazda 6 .
The number plates remain on the vehicle "for life", which is said to make it more difficult to trade in stolen vehicles. In addition, the new orange vehicle registration documents (previously gray) are equipped with new security features to make forgeries more difficult.
Special series
Dealer and test mark
Dealer plate for testing and trials held in France traditionally the letter W . This is followed by three digits and two letters in the usual format. General provisional license plates show the letters WW . A regional logo or the department number can also be displayed on the right-hand side of these signs.
Temporary license plates
Temporary license plates show silver-colored writing on a red background. The euro field is on the left, the blue bar indicating the region is omitted. Instead, the month and year numbers on top of each other indicate the date of maximum validity. The signs use combinations from the regular award series.
Free trade zones
The signs in the Haute-Savoie and Pays de Gex areas represent a special case . With a red background and silver-colored lettering, they essentially correspond to the temporary signs. However, they show the region field on the right edge. The logo of the Rhône-Alpes region is shown for both areas . In the case of Upper Savoy , the number 74 for the Haute-Savoie department is added , and 01 for the Ain department in the case of Pays de Gex .
Moped license plate
Since July 1, 2004, motorcycles under 50 cm³ must also be marked with a license plate when they are first registered or changed owners. With regard to the character sequence, these marks corresponded to the system that was generally introduced five years earlier. The combination began with two letters, followed by a maximum of three digits and one more letter. The euro field was in the upper left corner. The series was discontinued in late June 2015. Since then, the standard series has been used for this type of vehicle.
License plates for historic vehicles
Black signs with silver-colored inscriptions are optionally available for historic vehicles. The combination corresponds to the normal series, but the blue bars on both sides are missing.

Overseas territories
In the five overseas departments of Guadeloupe , Martinique , French Guiana , Réunion and Mayotte , normal serial number plates are issued, as these areas have the same status as mainland departments. Since the department numbers here have three digits (971 to 976), the first two digits are arranged one above the other. In the case of Mayotte, no regional logo is displayed.
In the other French overseas territories , special identification systems are used.
- Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon : letter sequence SPM , followed by one to three digits and a letter
- Saint-Barthélemy : no European field, one to three digits followed by a letter
- Saint-Martin : four digits followed by a hyphen and three letters
- New Caledonia : no European field, one to six digits, followed by the pair of letters NC
- French Polynesia : no European field, one to six digits followed by the letter P.
- Kerguelen : two digits to indicate the year of first registration, followed by four consecutive digits
- Wallis and Futuna : no European field, one to four digits, followed by the letters WF
Diplomatic plates
French diplomatic plates have had a dark green background and usually orange or silver-colored inscriptions since 1965. The license plates begin with a one to three-digit number that codes the country of origin or the international organization. The status is then given more precisely by the letters
- CMD (Ambassador, Chef de mission diplomatique)
- CD (diplomat)
- C (consul)
- K (other employees)
Finally there is a consecutive serial number. In the case of consular signs, the department number follows , as these are assigned by local authorities and not, like the other diplomatic signs, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
Membership in special international organizations is indicated by an additional letter in front of the code of origin:
- E for the OECD
- S for the Council of Europe
- U for UNESCO
In this case, the number 200 is added to the original code of origin.
