Historic license plates

License plate until 2008

License plates that were issued before 1951 are no longer valid and no longer in circulation. The first license plates were assigned from 1899. As early as 1911, government agencies only issued the rear license plate, but not the front one (which was voluntary).

In the interwar period, blue license plates with white numbers were issued until 1925. The color combination has been red / white since 1925. Initially, however, between 1925 and 1928, red license plates were issued with a white letter followed by one or more white numbers. The appearance with red characters on a white background, which was valid until mid-2010, existed since 1928:

  • 1928–1951: one or more digits

Long term approvals

Old Belgian license plate for long-term registrations

Members of the diplomatic or consular corps who did not have a diplomatic license plate, international organizations or certain military organizations were given a license plate with a white background and blue letters for the duration of their mandate. They were also given out to particularly important people (excluding politicians). Long-term registration is commonly known as a "tax-exempt license plate" as some owners do not have to pay road tax. The label consisted of six digits. On the left edge there was a blue EU ribbon with a B under the EU star wreath . A vignette was attached inside the star ring (only on the back), which indicated the month and the last year of validity for temporary license plates and the international organization for other license plates.

For license plates for temporary long-term registrations of motorcycles and three- or four-wheel motorcycles, the six digits were placed in two groups of three on top of each other.
