San Marinese license plates usually have light blue lettering on a white background. On the left edge they show the coat of arms of San Marino with the two-line Italian signature REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO (German: "Republic of San Marino"). The national symbol of San Marino is accordingly RSM .

Systematics

Since 1993, normal license plates begin with a letter, followed by a maximum of four digits and are assigned consecutively. If necessary, leading zeros are used. A9999 is followed by B0001. In the case of motorcycles, A001 started in 1994. These marks are always two lines, with only the coat of arms and the country name appearing in the upper line and the combination appearing in the lower line. Reduced two-line license plates are issued for mopeds and other low-powered vehicles. This started with 0001 and in 1998 a serial letter according to the pattern A001 was introduced.

  • Trailer license plates show the letters a red R for Rimorchio in Italian (German: "trailer").
  • Temporary license plates have black font, show four digits and begin with a red E for Escursionisti Esteri .
  • Marks for work machines have green letters and begin with MO for Macchina Operatrice .
  • Marks for agricultural machines have black letters on a yellow background and begin with MA for Macchina Agricole , tractors were arranged in three lines: coat of arms and RSM in light blue, four-digit number in light blue, TRATTORE in red.
  • Trial markings can also be designed like two-line panels, but with the light blue number in large in the middle, the coat of arms and the light blue letters RSM above and the word PROVA in red below are in smaller font size.
  • Custom license plates can be requested since 2004, are five-digit and cost 750 euros.
  • Various special license plates are also issued for certain institutions. As in Italy, these have red letters, each followed by a light blue number:
    • Diplomatic license plates show CD
    • The Red Cross has the letters CRS for Croce Rossa Sammarinese in Italian
    • Police (Polizia Civile), Gendarmeria and Guardia di Rocca use signs with the red or green letters POLIZIA

history

License plate from 1966 to 1976
License plate from 1987 to 1993

In 1966, shields were introduced that showed a simplified coat of arms with a red border, the letters RSM and a maximum of four additional digits. Rear license plates were two lines with a coat of arms and RSM in the top line. As in Italy, the letters were placed after the numbers on the front signs. When all 9999 combinations were exhausted in 1975, a serial letter was introduced for the thousand digit. The serial number 10.342 was written as A342, 11.342 corresponding to B342 etc. In 1976, the font was thicker and the serial number had five digits, so that the serial letter was omitted again.

The most fundamental change was made in 1979. The letters RSM were omitted and the complete national coat of arms was shown. In addition, the written country name appeared for the first time at the bottom and a sticker with the year was introduced. In 1987 this sticker was replaced by a badge. The lettering of the country's name has now been shown reduced under the coat of arms. Trailer license plates were marked with a small red R at the beginning. Finally, in 1993, when the serial number was around 47,000, the current system was introduced.
