A desired license plate is a vehicle license plate in which the vehicle owner can influence the allocation of the registration number, for example to personalize his license plate . The design options are limited by national regulations for the allocation of labels. More and more countries around the world are making this kind of influence possible.

In Denmark , Iceland , Latvia , Norway and Sweden you can choose the complete lettering yourself. Even special letters in the respective national language are permitted in some countries.

Only part of the license plate can u. a. in Austria , Slovakia , Slovenia or even Namibia and South Africa themselves. So z. B. in Namibia the country code NA remain visible.

Many countries only allow personalization within the framework of the system-related possible combinations of the number plate. This is the case, for example, in Germany and Switzerland, where the user can only choose from a pool of possible combinations.

In some other countries, the combination of the number plates cannot be changed, but the holder can choose from different designs. Irish license plates often have very different (sometimes difficult to read) fonts . In Belgium , only the rear license plate is issued by the state. The holder can buy the front in various designs or manufacture it himself.

National

  • In Belgium you can freely choose your desired number plates with one to eight characters for 1000 euros.
  • In Denmark , personalized number plates with two to seven characters (digits or letters, including the Danish letters Æ, Ø and Å and up to three individual spaces) are possible.
  • In Germany , uniform fees of 10.20 euros are set for a custom license plate and, if applicable, 2.60 euros for its reservation. The deadline for reservations with the relevant vehicle registration authority or online via the websites of the responsible districts and cities can include different periods of time: usually effective between 10 and 90 days, reservations can sometimes also have binding validity for a longer period. In the meantime, it is also possible in Germany to “take” a license plate with you to the new vehicle when changing vehicles. The license plate reused in this way is then (also with regard to the fees) as a desired license plate; However, it is still cheaper to take away than to mint new license plates. There used to be transition periods for taking along, but now you can completely de-register and re-register via EDP systems without any waiting time. Since 2012, the federal legislature has also allowed old license plates from former districts / cities as an alternative to the regular license plates through the license plate liberalization .   • In Latvia, you can freely choose combinations of at least one letter and one number.
  • In Lithuania , a desired number plate can be issued from the permitted numbers and letters.
  • In Austria , license plates of your own choice are possible, for which the registered owner can apply for almost any combination of letters and numbers as a pre- marking . A minimum of three characters (at least one letter or number) is possible after the ID of the issuing office, and a maximum of seven characters including (one or two) letters of the issuing office are possible. The reservation or assignment of a license plate of your choice entails a fee of 200 euros plus administrative fees of 28.30 euros and is not transferable. The reservation is valid for 15 years and can then be extended by making a new deposit. The money goes to a fund for endowing projects in the field of road safety ( road safety fund ) .
  • In Poland , Slovakia and Slovenia , combinations can be freely selected using the two-digit regional code.
  • In Sweden , where the license plates are personal and valid for ten years, a personal license plate can be requested for a fee of 6000  SKR .
  • In Norway you then have to pay NKR 9000  , otherwise the same applies as in Sweden.
  • In Switzerland are license plates issued by the cantonal authorities usually by ascending numbers, license plates, however, are limited extent. If a number is free, it can be obtained for a fee (which varies depending on the number of digits). In most cantons, special numbers are now auctioned to the highest bidder and achieve even higher prices: in 2018 was in Canton train with around 223,000  francs for ZG 10 paid a record sum. In the canton of Vaud , drivers can choose a special number themselves. One can now speak of a nationwide number boom. Since the allocation is made to a person (and not to a vehicle), a number can also be sold depending on the canton. In the canton of St. Gallen, for example, five- or multi-digit numbers can be traded, while one to four-digit numbers can only be inherited. Admission is only granted in the canton of residence or place of business.
  • In the Czech Republic , eight-digit alphanumeric combinations with at least one digit are possible.
  • In Hungary , six-digit combinations with at least one digit at the end are possible.

Sheikh Sa bisherd al-Khouri in the United Arab Emirates paid the highest price to date for a custom license plate in February 2008, at around ten million euros for the number  1 .

Desired license plates and the like are not possible. a. in France , Greece , Ireland and Italy .
