Finnish license plates are insurance plates and have not provided any information about the vehicle's registration location since October 1989.

The license plates usually show black letters on a white background. Since 2001 there is a blue band with the letters FIN and the twelve European stars on the left edge . The code consists of a combination of up to three letters and a maximum three-digit number, separated by a point. With 118 mm × 442 mm or 200 mm × 256 mm for two lines, the signs do not correspond to the European standard dimensions of 110 mm × 520 mm. License plates without an EU field are even shorter at 397 mm × 118 mm.

Until 1973 there were license plates with white letters on black plates, after which the current design was introduced. Until 1989, the first letter of the sign coded the province in which the vehicle was first registered. Since then, the signs have been awarded continuously.

In Finland it is possible to obtain a license plate of your choice, with which the combination within the scheme can be freely chosen.

Smaller, two-line indicator began to 1991 with an N , then with J . For motorcycles , narrow signs with two letters and a maximum of three digits were originally given. In the meantime, labels according to the 12 ABC scheme are also used.

The letter combination of signs for trailers has started with D since 2013 . Previously, the letters P (until 1998) and W (1998-2013) were used.

Export indicators show a letter and a maximum of three digits. On the right-hand side there is a red field with details of the month and year of validity.

Temporary license plates are made of paper. They show two letters followed by four digits, each in red.

License plates for historic vehicles are based on the appearance of the old Finnish license plates. The background is black, the writing is white. In contrast to the black signs up to 1973 there is no coding of the province.

Tractors have yellow license plates with black letters. The sign consists of a maximum of three digits and a maximum of three letters.

The Finnish Armed Forces use yellow signs with black text. They show a maximum of four digits and thus resemble the license plates of the Norwegian military .

Diplomatic license plates do not show a euro field. They have white writing on a light blue background. The signs show the letters CD or C and a maximum five-digit number, the first two digits of which specify the country of origin.

In 1993 Finland changed the nationality symbol from SF ( S uomi- F inland) to FIN .

The Åland Islands have had special license plates that begin with ÅL since 1992 . According to a decision by the Åland government on March 19, 2010, Åland uses the nationality code AX .
