The province of Kuopio ( Finnish. Kuopion lääni , Swedish. Kuopio län ) is a former province ( lääni ) in Finland . It existed until 1997 and had Kuopio as its capital. The area of the province of Kuopio was last congruent with today's landscape of North Savo, excluding the area of the former municipality of Kangaslampi , which only became part of North Savo in 2005 when it was incorporated into Varkaus .

The province of Kuopio goes on in 1775 by order of the Swedish King Gustav III. founded province of Savo-Karelia . This included roughly the present-day landscapes of Northern Savo and Northern Karelia and the northern part of Southern Savo . As a result of the provincial reform of 1831, the province of Savo-Karelia was renamed the Province of Kuopio, at the same time today's South Savo came to the newly founded Province of Mikkeli . In 1944, after the Continuation War, some eastern parts of the Kuopio Province were ceded to the Soviet Union . In 1960, the new province of North Karelia was separated from the eastern part of the province of Kuopio, and at the same time the communities of Hankasalmi and Konnevesi joined the newly founded province of Central Finland . Through the provincial reform of 1997, the province of Kuopio was merged with the province of North Karelia and most of the province of Mikkeli to form the new province of eastern Finland .
