Maltese license plates correspond in size and design to the European standard with black lettering and a white base color. They show in the left margin a blue field the twelve European stars and with national letters M . This is followed by three letters, a square sticker and three digits. These signs were introduced in 1995 and at that time already bore the EU symbolism, although Malta only became a member of the European Union in 2004.

In Malta, as in Germany, the FE font is used for the lettering of the license plates.
