Geographical distribution of the abbreviations

Irish license plates , in the current format, have started in 1987 with the two- or three-digit year of the vehicle's first registration date(e.g. 03 for 2003). In 2013 a three-digit year prefix was introduced for the first time according to the pattern 131 = January to June and 132 = July to December in orderto avoidthe unlucky number 13 on the signs. This is followed by the city or county code (e.g. G for Galway ), followed by a number in the order in which the license plate was assigned. The Irish name of the county is usually at the top of the label. The license plates have been designed as Euro plates since 1991and have black lettering on a white background. The license plates are vehicle-specific. If a vehicle is sold to another county or the owner moves, it keeps its registration number.

Some vehicles still have license plates based on the old UK system from 1903 , of which certain codes of origin ( index marks ) were reserved for Ireland (see codes for Northern Ireland ). These license plates consist of white characters on a black background, from 1969 for reflective signs black characters on a white background (front) or a red background (rear).

The labels had the following scheme: CC NNN or XCC NNN , from 1969 also NNN CC or NNN XCC , where CC denotes the code of origin, N denotes a number and X denotes any letter. At least one of the two letters of the code of origin was an I or a Z.

The old codes are given with the year they first appeared. Groups of additional letters are specified as regular expressions .

For temporary registrations of imported vehicles, license plates are issued that consist of the letters ZZ , usually followed by a five-digit number.

For vehicles that are thirty years old or older, or for imported vehicles that date from before 1987, license plates that deviate from the current system can be issued upon request. These labels consist of the letters ZV followed by a three to five-digit number. The range of numbers provides information about the competent approval authority and is shown in the table below. If a ZV approval is not applied for, the vehicle receives a license plate according to the current scheme, e.g. 52-D-12 for a vehicle from 1952 that is registered in Dublin .

Comparatively unusual is the fact that vehicle owners can also add license plates with individual fonts because the Irish Department of Transport has not specified a specific font. The use of impermissible colors or badly legible fonts has now been regulated by law.

The mayors of Dublin , Cork , Limerick and Waterford have the privilege of wearing the number 1 on their license plate. So the mayor of Dublin has z. B. the license plate 131-D-1 .
