The current license plates were introduced on February 16, 2011 and are largely based on the Italian Euro plates . The signs show a blue field at both ends. On the left side it contains the double-headed eagle of the Albanian coat of arms and the nationality symbol AL . The year of registration appears in the blue field on the right. However, as in Italy, specifying the year is voluntary. The actual combination is continuous and therefore does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the origin of the vehicle. It consists of two letters, followed by a hologram , three digits and another two letters.

Temporary signs have red font. The combination consists of two letters, a number and the letters PRK for Albanian Përkohshme or PROV . Number plates for taxis also have red font, but have a yellow background. They show two letters, three digits and the letter T for Taksi (taxi). Diplomatic license plates have green letters. They begin with the letters CD for members of the diplomatic corps or TR for other embassy staff. Albanian police vehicles have license plates with blue letters and the letters MB for Ministria Brendshme (Ministry of the Interior). License plates for agricultural vehicles have white lettering on a green background. The signs show the letters MB for Makine Bujqësore (agricultural machine) after the two consecutive letters . Trailer tags include the letter R for Rimorkio (trailer). Vehicles of the Albanian armed forces have different license plates. They show a U for ushtria (army) followed by only numbers.

Registration in DIN script up to 2002

Until the early 1990s, white signs consisting of two letters of the district of origin, a red star and a combination of numbers were issued. Diplomatic license plates were labeled TD for Trup Diplomatik .

The labeling system was reformed in the early 1990s. The signs consisted of two letters that encoded the corresponding circles , as well as a consecutive four-digit number. There was another letter at the end. The license plates were later supplemented by a red band on the left edge, which showed the double-headed eagle of the Albanian coat of arms over the letter AL . In addition, a variant of the DIN font has now been used as the font. In 2002 the font was modified again.

Diplomatic signs had green letters and were largely similar to today's signs. They showed the letters CD and four digits in two groups of two, separated by a hyphen. The first two digits indicate the area of origin. Taxi signs showed the letters TAXI at the end of the sign . Yellow license plates with black inscription and the letter Z were given to official vehicles. Until 2011 the police used signs with the words POLICIA and a combination of digits in dark blue color.
