history

Building where the Lushnya Congress took place in 1920

Lushnja has existed as a settlement since the 15th century when the place was called Lusme . In an Ottoman defter from 1431, 100 inhabitants were counted in 15 houses. In 1830 the village was first called Lushnja.

In January 1920, local rulers from all over Albania came together in the centrally located, then still very small village. They gathered for the so-called Lushnja Congress to re-regulate the self-determination of the Albanians over Albania after the First World War . They gave the state a constitution, elected a government and declared Tirana the capital of the state. The building in which the meeting took place is now a museum.

During communist times there were several penal camps and internment villages for politically persecuted people in Myzeqe not far from Lushnja .

In 1970 industrialization began in Lushnja . Manufactories, factories and businesses emerged.
