The Karavasta lagoon is the largest coastal lagoon in Albania . It is located in central Albania near Divjaka about 20 kilometers west of Lushnja on the Adriatic coast between the mouths of the Shkumbin and Seman rivers , through whose activities it was formed. The size of the lagoon is 45 km². The maximum depth is only 1.3 meters, with the average depth being 0.7 meters. The lagoon is only separated from the sea by narrow, wooded dunes . A swamp has formed around it .

National park

Southern part of the lagoon

Since 1994, 12.5 square kilometers of the lagoon and adjacent pine forests as well as parts of the spit have been protected as the Divjaka-Karavasta National Park . It is an internationally protected Ramsar area , as the lagoon is an important refuge for some rare water birds , especially as a wintering area for migratory birds .

tourism

In Albania, the region's tourist potential is repeatedly pointed out. The long sandy beach is already a popular destination for the Albanians. The first ecotourism projects fell victim to the uprisings in 1997 . Tourism and the resulting emissions, in their current form, have a negative impact on the sensitive ecosystem and wildlife: Waste, pollution, new buildings, deforestation and human noise are among the problems that the protected area has to contend with.
