The district of Lushnja ( Albanian : Rrethi i Lushnjës ) was one of the 36 administrative districts of Albania that were abolished in the summer of 2015 after an administrative reform. The area with an area of 712 square kilometers belongs to Qark Fier and had 117,913 inhabitants (2011 census), with the local administration even giving 176,377 people. With a population density of 248 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district was one of the five most densely populated districts in Albania.

The district was named after the main town Lushnja .

geography

The group comprised an area in the northern part of the very flat Myzeqe - level . To the west, the Myzeqe is bounded by two chains of hills, the Kodrat e Divjakës ( Divjaka Hills ) and the Kodrat e Ardenicës ( Ardenica Hills ) adjoining it in the south . Behind it lies the coastal zone of the Adriatic Sea . In the east the landscape merges into the rolling hills of the Dumreja . At the foot of the Dumreja in the very southeast of the district is the Thana water reservoir , which is used to irrigate a large part of the area of the district. In the north, the Shkumbin River forms the border.

Karavasta lagoon and Pisha e Divjakës

Karavasta Lagoon

The lagoon of Karavasta ( Albanian Laguna e Karavastasë ) is located west of Lushnja, only separated from the sea by a few dunes and a marshland . This brackish water - lagoon between the mouths of two rivers Shkumbin and Seman and its surroundings are one of the most important nature reserves in Albania. The Divjaka-Karavasta National Park has been protected by the international Ramsar Convention since 1994 . Numerous rare species of birds, including pelicans, breed around the lagoon . There is a large pine forest on the coast . Divjaka Beach with its small hotels is a popular destination for Albanian people looking for relaxation.

Ardenica Monastery

Range of hills with the monastery on the ridge

A major attraction is the Ardenica Orthodox Monastery . The historical building complex is located on a small hill not far from the road from Lushnja to Fier ( SH4 ). The complex is one of the most important monasteries in Albania.

history

The Myzeqe Plain was still swampy during World War II . Many political prisoners also had to help drain the swamps . During the communist system , numerous villages in Lushnja County served as places of exile for families of political prisoners. They had to do hard field work there and were not allowed to leave the villages.

economy

In addition to tourism , which is currently being established, the district lives mainly from agriculture . The fertile Myzeqe plain is the "breadbasket" of Albania. The only other larger town in the very rural district is Divjaka with 8400 inhabitants north of the Karavasta lagoon and about ten kilometers from the sea. Larger, however, is the municipality of Tërbuf with 10,201 inhabitants, which is located in the northeast of Divjaka closer to the traffic routes.

Communities

The area of the district today belongs to the municipalities ( Bashkia ) Divjaka and Lushnja.
