Aerial view of Gramsh and the surrounding area

The district of Gramsh ( Albanian : Rrethi i Gramshit ) was one of the 36 administrative districts of Albania that were abolished in the summer of 2015 after an administrative reform. The district with an area of 695 square kilometers belonged to the Qark Elbasan . The area has 24,231 inhabitants (2011 census), according to the local authorities even around 40,000 inhabitants (2010), of which around a third live in the city of Gramsh , the eponymous capital.

The area now forms the Bashkia (municipality) Gramsh .

Gramsh is remote in the mountainous southeast of the country. The circle formed a section of the valley of the Devoll River , which crosses it from southeast to northwest. The Devoll is dammed into a large artificial lake at the valley exit. The dam is located a little north in the former Elbasan district . In the very south-west lies the Tomorr mountain , at 2,414  m above sea level. A. the mightiest mountain far and wide. In the east, too, the landscape rises above 2000 meters in various places, for example in the Valamara ( 2373  m above sea level ).

Devoll Valley south of Gramsh

Since the road through the Devoll Valley to Korça is not paved throughout, the Gramsh district is away from any through traffic. All access traffic reaches Gramsh via Elbasan . Numerous villages in the district are hardly accessible by roads. The whole district lives almost exclusively from agriculture . Almost three quarters of the population belong to the Bektashi religious community .
