The Puka district ( Albanian : Rrethi i Pukës ) was one of the 36 administrative districts in Albania that were abolished in the summer of 2015 following an administrative reform. The district with an area of 1034 square kilometers belonged to Shkodra Qark . It had 18,474 inhabitants (2011 census). Local authorities, on the other hand, give a number of around 34,000 inhabitants. The district was named after the main town Puka .
geography
The Puka district comprised a region in the north of Albania in the mountains. The highest point reaches almost 2000 meters. The landscape is very rugged. Winter brings a lot of snow with it, some of which blocks important roads and often cuts off remote villages from the outside world for a long time.
In the north are the two reservoirs Vau-Deja-See and Koman-See . They dam the Drin , Albania's longest river.
population
The population is rural. Not even the main town of Puka has 5000 inhabitants. Like all Albanian mountain regions, Puka is also very poor. The only major economic importance is the wood industry . There is also mining, which was practically suspended in between. Unemployment is above average in a national comparison. Many people migrate to the urban centers of Albania, so that the population is falling sharply. Most of the residents are Catholics . Only a third are Muslim .
traffic
The area is connected to the west and south by old main routes , the SH5 and the SH30 , with central Albania. They continue east over the Qafa e Malit to Kukës and Kosovo and north to Tropoja . In the past, these roads from Shkodra and from the Mirdita were the only connections to northeast Albania and the Kosovar border. Today, through traffic to Kukës bypasses the region to the southeast on the new Milot-Kukës motorway .

The area of the former district is now part of the municipalities ( Bashkia ) Puka and Fushë-Arrëz .
